Rata Sapthami 2019

Ratha Sapthami 2019
Ratha Saptami or Rathasapthami or Magha Saptami is a Hindu festival that falls on the seventh day (Saptami) in the bright half (Shukla Paksha) of the Hindu month Maagha. It is symbolically represented in the form of the Sun God Surya turning his Ratha (Chariot) drawn by seven horses (representing seven colours) towards the northern hemisphere, in a north-easterly direction. It also marks the birth of Surya and hence celebrated as Surya Jayanti (the Sun-god’s birthday)

There are numerous stories related to Masi Magam. One such story is related to Thiruvanamalai Maasi Magam. It is said that King Vallalan of Thiruvannamalai was childless and hence he prayed to Lord Shiva of Thiruvanamalai Temple and soon became his ardent devotee. Lord Shiva who was happy with the king's devotion transformed himself into a baby and played inside the Kingdom. But when King Vallalan tried to carry the baby , it soon disappered.

The hallowed full moon day in the month of Vaikāsi, under the Visākam star is the Vaikāsi Pournima also termed Vaisāki Paurnima. The Vaikāsi moonlight floods the world with a glorious effulgence making the over arching sky infinite and vast. In our tropical skies, the moon, 'slowly and silently walks the night in her silver shoon.' The transparent clouds seem to salute her as she moves unhurriedly. This is indeed Nature's magnificence manifesting itself with an overwhelming grandeur. And with this mysteriously beautiful soft light of sanctity, comes a hush, deep and strange reminding the Hindus and Buddhists of the significance of this sacred day
